Ask every contractor
- Are you licensed and insured, and can I see current certificates?
- How deep is the base and what material do you use?
- Will the base be compacted in lifts, and with what equipment?
- How will water be directed away from my house and foundation?
- Is geotextile fabric included where soils are soft?
- What edge restraint and joint sand will you use?
- Who is on site day to day, and is it your crew or a subcontractor?
- What is the realistic start and finish window?
- How is the site protected and cleaned up each day?
- What does the workmanship warranty cover, in writing?
Watch for these signals
Verbal-only estimates, large cash deposits, pressure to decide today, and pricing far below everyone else usually mean thin base work. The savings show up as settling within a few seasons.
