10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Hardscape Contractor

February 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Insurance, base specs, timelines, cleanup and warranties — what to confirm before signing anything.

Hardscaping is a significant investment and most of the quality is buried before you ever see the finished surface. These questions separate contractors quickly.

Ask every contractor

  • Are you licensed and insured, and can I see current certificates?
  • How deep is the base and what material do you use?
  • Will the base be compacted in lifts, and with what equipment?
  • How will water be directed away from my house and foundation?
  • Is geotextile fabric included where soils are soft?
  • What edge restraint and joint sand will you use?
  • Who is on site day to day, and is it your crew or a subcontractor?
  • What is the realistic start and finish window?
  • How is the site protected and cleaned up each day?
  • What does the workmanship warranty cover, in writing?

Watch for these signals

Verbal-only estimates, large cash deposits, pressure to decide today, and pricing far below everyone else usually mean thin base work. The savings show up as settling within a few seasons.
