Cost, lifespan, maintenance and curb appeal compared for Rhode Island driveways.
Your driveway is the biggest hardscape surface on the property. The right choice depends on budget, how long you plan to stay, and how much appearance matters at the street.
Asphalt
Lowest up-front cost and fast to install. Expect sealcoating every few years and a service life in the 15 to 20 year range with good base work. Softens in extreme heat.
Concrete
Mid-to-high cost, very durable, and clean looking. Needs control joints and correct thickness to manage cracking, and it is sensitive to de-icing salts.
Pavers
Highest cost, best appearance, longest life, and the only option that repairs invisibly. A frequent compromise: an asphalt or concrete field with a paver apron and border, which delivers most of the visual impact for a fraction of a full paver install.
The part nobody sees
Whatever surface you pick, base depth, compaction and grading determine lifespan. A thin surface over a poor base fails no matter what it is made of.
